Parent Visa Subclass 103
The Subclass 103 is a permanent visa that allows a parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia indefinitely. While it’s a more affordable option compared to other Parent visas, it comes with a significantly long processing time, often taking many years.
We recommend consulting with us to assess your situation before deciding to apply for this visa.
Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143
This visa offers parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents, who pass the “Balance of Family” test, permanent residency in Australia. It also grants the right to work, study, and enrol in Medicare (Australia’s public health system). The application fee is divided into two instalments: the first is paid when the application is submitted, and the second is due when requested by the Department of Home Affairs just before the visa is finalised. The applicant’s sponsor, who must be their child, must agree to provide accommodation and financial support for at least two years, if necessary. Please note, processing times for this visa can be extremely long (potentially 10 years or more) due to high demand and limited annual visa availability. As it is an “Offshore Visa,” meaning the applicant must be outside Australia at the time of grant, it does not offer a Bridging Visa to remain in Australia while the application is being processed.
Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 from 173
Applying for the subclass 143 in this way acts as the second and final step towards securing permanent residency of Australia. The advantage of taking this pathway is to split the high instalment cost which is payable as part of the Contributory Parent stream, into two steps. The second of these two instalments is payable as part of this application. AILO offers professional assistance with the entirety of the application. If we assisted with your original 173 application, we also offer a discount for the second-stage 143 application.
Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 173
This visa provides temporary residency of Australia, with work and study rights and the option to enrol in Medicare (Australia’s public health service). The high application fee is split into two instalments; the first due upon application, the second upon an application for a permanent Contributory Parent visa – the subclass 143 – which can be made at any time within two years of the 173 being granted. A child in Australia will act as a ‘Sponsor’ and must agree to providing accommodation and financial support for the duration of the visa.
Non-Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 804
This visa is for aged parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents, granting permanent residency along with work and study rights, and access to Medicare (Australia’s public health service).
It must be lodged from within Australia, and a Bridging Visa is granted upon application. Initial processing begins after 3-4 years, at which point health checks and police clearances are required. If approved, you will receive a “Queue Date.” From this point, the wait time for final visa approval can extend for many years—potentially 20 or more—due to the limited number of visas issued each year and high demand.
If international travel is needed while waiting, a Bridging Visa B will be required. Sponsors are also required to provide accommodation and financial support for at least two years, if necessary.
Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 864
This visa, once granted, provides permanent residency of Australia, with work and study rights and access to Medicare (Australia’s public health service). The high application fee is split into two instalments: the first due upon application, the second upon request of the Department of Home Affairs.
Sponsors must commit to providing accommodation and financial support for at least 2 years.
The primary applicant must be of “pensionable age” in Australia.
Currently that’s 66 ½ but will increase to 67.
Applicants must be in Australia at the time the application is lodged and when it is finalised.
SPONSORED PARENT (TEMPORARY) VISA (Subclass 870)
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa is designed to allow parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents to spend an extended time in Australia with their children. It does not lead to permanent residency; however, it is also not subject to the ‘Balance of Family’ test that impacts most other Parent visas. Therefore, there is no requirement for at least half of your children to permanently reside in Australia. If you have one Australian child, who has lived in Australia for at least 4 years and can meet the sponsorship requirements, you can apply.
This visa allows for a maximum cumulative stay of 10 years, although you must normally be outside of Australia for at least 90 days before a second visa can be granted. Visa applicants must be sponsored by an Australia-based child, who agrees to provide financial support and accommodation while the visa holder is in Australia, if required.
884-CONTRIBUTORY AGED PARENT (TEMPORARY) VISA
This visa provides permanent residency of Australia for parents of pensionable age in Australia, with work and study rights and the option to enroll in Medicare (Australia’s public health service). An Australia-based child acts as a sponsor and must commit to providing accommodation and financial support for at least 2 years. Applicants must be in Australia at the time the application is lodged and when it is finalised.
